My Chosen Certificate for 'One By One'
When choosing my certificate I considered both a 15 and an 18. Both have their pros and cons in relation to audience and likely commercial success, but I decided to go with an 18 certificate after looking in detail at films which had received the highest rating on the BBFC's website.
'Smile 2' received an 18 for the following reasons:
Violence - People die in a gory fashion from self-inflicted injuries while under the influence of supernatural possession.
Threat and horror - There are suspenseful and sustained sequences of supernatural horror, including a scene in which malevolent entities chase a woman.
Language - Infrequent very strong language ('c**t') is accompanied by more frequent use of strong language ('f**k', 'motherf**ker'), as well as milder terms such as 'bitch', 'dick', 'ass', 'shit', 'crap', 'asshole', 'God', 'damn' and 'Jesus'.
Drugs - Characters snort lines of white powder. Other scenes include references to prescription drug misuse and past substance abuse. However, drug misuse is clearly not endorsed by the work as a whole.
Injury detail - Occasional scenes include the sight of a severed limb and bloody guts in the aftermath of a car crash.
Theme - Occasional verbal and visual references are made to a person's struggle with their mental health.
Flashing/flickering lights - This work contains flashing images which may affect viewers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.
'Evil Dead Rise' received an 18 for the following reasons:
Violence - There are sequences of strong bloody violence in which characters are stabbed, slashed, scalped and bitten by demonic forces. A woman is decapitated using a chainsaw and her head kicked into a woodchipper.
Injury detail - Scenes have a frequent focus on blood and strong gory images. In one scene, a bloodied scalp is thrown to the floor after being ripped from a woman's head. Another sees a demon eat the side of a man's face and suck his eye out of its socket. Characters are soaked head to toe in blood and a woman repeatedly vomits after becoming possessed.
Additional issues - There is strong, supernatural threat and horror throughout often involving children. Infrequent use of very strong language occurs ('c**t') in addition to more regular use of strong language ('f**k') and milder terms including 'slut', 'shit', 'ass', 'bitch' 'screw' and 'hell'.
'Terrifier 3' received an 18 for the following reasons:
Violence - A serial killer pulls flesh from the faces of his victims whilst they are still alive, hacks off their limbs and heads using axes and chainsaws, and freezes people with liquid nitrogen before butchering them. People are also shot, slashed and stabbed resulting in bloody detail.
Threat and horror - There are sustained scenes of supernatural horror when an undead woman playing 'host' to a demonic being assists a sadistic clown on his murder spree.
Language - There is infrequent use of very strong language ('c**t') and more frequent use of strong language ('f**k').
Sex - It is implied that an undead woman uses a shard of glass to masturbate beneath her skirt, resulting in bloody detail. A scene of strong sex includes breast and buttock nudity, sexual moaning and thrusting detail.
Injury detail - Scenes of violence feature excessive bloody detail. There is a focus on the limbs, severed heads, flayed skin and entrails of dead and injured people. An undead woman eats the intestines from a corpse.
'Thanksgiving' received an 18 for the following reasons:
Violence - Frequent scenes of strong bloody violence include stabbings, eviscerations, impalements and beheadings. A person is gruesomely bludgeoned to death with a mallet, and another is trapped in a hot oven, with close-up sight of their skin starting to cook as they die. Another victim’s face is pressed against freezing metal, forcing them to tear their skin to escape.
Threat and horror - There are strong, sustained scenes of horror and threat, including ‘jump scare’ moments, as people are hunted, terrorised and attacked by a sadistic masked killer.
Language - There is frequent use of strong language ('f**k', 'motherf**ker', 'c**ksucker'). Milder terms include 'pussy', 'cock', 'bitch', 'dick', 'asshole', 'ass', 'shit', 'bullshit', 'balls', 'nuts' and 'son of a bitch', in addition to the middle finger gesture.
Drugs - There are infrequent verbal references to misuse of drugs including Adderall and ketamine.
Sexual violence and sexual threat - There are brief and undetailed verbal references to sexual violence.
Injury detail - Strong bloody images include gruesome wounds, exposed intestines, severed heads, gushing blood, and corpses lying in pools of blood. A killer carves bloodless flesh from a cooked headless human corpse and attempts to force another victim to eat it. A person is partially scalped after their hair becomes caught on the wheel of a shopping trolley during a riot.
Nudity - There is a sequence of sexualised rear nudity wherein a teenager exposes her behind for her boyfriend's enjoyment while jumping on a trampoline.
Rude humour - There are scenes involving projectile vomiting.
Films like those above all contained similar elements that I wanted in 'One By One'. It is a slasher movie, so the levels of gore and injury detail would be high, and I want the film to have a constant threat of menace. This certificate certainly limits my audience, and may not perform as well financially at the boc office as a result, but I feel the higher certificate will give the film cult status and that this would make it appealing to spectators.
